Villa Cavrois | Robert Mallet-Stevens
Designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens in 1929 as a private residence for Paul Cavrois near Lille, France. Villa Cavrois embodies the luxury and glamour of the International Style.
An early advocate for modern architectural thoughts, Villa Cavrois champoioned many of the architect’s modernist ideals. Large expanse of glass and connection to the outdoors exemplifies qualities of light, air and functionality. Restrained ornamentation is complimented by a refined material palette. The horizontality and geometric volumes demonstrates the forms of modernity.
Commissioned by a textile industrialist for his large family, the spacious layout adheres to traditional French chateaux, reinforcing bourgeoise domestic hierarchy. In this way, Mallet-Steven’s progressive architectural thoughts lies in form and form alone.
Detached from reality, Villa Cavrois epitomizes the luxurious dreams of modern architecture.
